Dear Colleagues and Students,
I am pleased to announce that the Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research at The University of Hong Kong have been formally approved by the Senate and are now in effect.
The Guidelines provide a framework for the ethical and accountable use of generative AI (GenAI) tools in research activities, aligning with the University’s commitment to academic excellence and integrity. They aim to support researchers, supervisors, and students in navigating the opportunities and challenges presented by AI technologies while upholding the highest standards of scholarly practice.
The Guidelines outline the conditions for the acceptable use of GenAI at different stages of the research process, emphasising compliance with existing University policies and guidelines including
Policy on Research Integrity (https://www.rss.hku.hk/integrity/rcr/policy)
Policy on the Management of Research Data and Records (https://www.rss.hku.hk/integrity/research-data-records-management#policy-research-data-records-management)
Human Research Ethics Committee Operational Guidelines and Procedures(https://www.rss.hku.hk/HREC/guidelines.pdf)
Intellectual Property Rights Policy (https://www.rss.hku.hk/contracts/ipr).
The Guidelines and related resources are available on the Research Services website at https://www.rss.hku.hk/integrity/generative-ai.
I encourage all members of the University to read these Guidelines thoroughly and adopt these principles into your research practices where appropriate, bearing in mind that there may be discipline-specific considerations that require further discussion with academic leaders in your research areas. Your cooperation is essential for fostering a culture of responsibility and innovation in the use of emerging technologies.
Best regards,
Professor Max Shen
Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research)
